WHEN MARKING THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF LITHUANIAN-U.S. DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF RELATIONS IN VARIOUS FIELDS, THE AMBASSADOR SAYS
When marking the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of Lithuanian-U.S. diplomatic relations, we have to think not only about the political and security cooperation, but also about the development of bilateral cultural, scientific, education and economic relations,” Ambassador of Lithuania to the U.S. Žygimantas Pavilionis said during the meeting of the Lithuanian Catholic Federation “Ateitis” in North America.
At an event in the camp “Dainava” in the state of Michigan on 2-4 September, the Ambassador stressed that business and economic relations had a huge unexploited potential in business and economic relations, even though there were many opportunities for the strengthening of such relations between the U.S. and Lithuania. As an example, the Ambassador mentioned his visit of 2 September to Detroit, where he met with executive director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority John Jamian and other programme managers of urban development and the development of the Port of Detroit. During the meeting, officials agreed to hold a trade mission of the Port of Detroit to Klaipėda State Seaport next year.
According to Ž.Pavilionis, twenty years of intensive U.S.-Lithuania diplomatic relations proved that the two countries had strong ties.
“The United States never recognized the annexation of Lithuania, and even now the country remains an important strategic partner of Lithuania and is well aware of Lithuanian’s aspirations and challenges. We are confident that the Lithuanian-American partnership will continue to develop successfully also in the future,” the Ambassador said.
The 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of the U.S.-Baltic diplomatic relations will be officially marked on 8 September in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Department of State will hold a reception “Together Again”.
The diplomatic relations of Lithuania and the United States were re-established on 6 September 1991.
