WELCOME SPEECH BY MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF LITHUANIA AUDRONIUS AŽUBALIS AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “LIFE SCIENCES BALTICS 2012”. Vilnius, 12 September 2012.

Excellences, dear representatives of science, business, and governments, friends and colleagues, ladies and gentlemen,

This is a special day for all those who think about today and the future, and about how we and the coming generations will live. This three-day conference, the first event of such magnitude in our region, is an excellent opportunity to encourage cooperation between business and science, countries and governments - cooperation which surpasses borders, and which is driven by new ideas and opportunities. Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia view “Life Sciences Baltics 2012” as a platform for our forward-looking science and start-up businesses to present their by now accumulated experience and quality to the wider global audience. It is our goal, with the assistance from everyone, to continue this work.

Therefore, I am extremely delighted to welcome all of you here in Vilnius, the vibrant capital of Lithuania that is famous for its creative minds. High level of your participation in this event demonstrates that life sciences make an increasingly important part of our lives and that we all - the public, the science and business communities, and the government - are interconnected. We need a common understanding and cooperation to attain the highest degree of competitiveness, and contribute to the continued growth of our economies, and the quality of human life, in the future.

The life science type companies established and operating in Lithuania and beyond are the proof of success, as well as mergers of Lithuanian and regional companies with the global leaders in life sciences.  One could argue that we and our Baltic colleagues have made the essential break-through in the field, however, there is a feeling that these achievements have not yet reached the full scope of recognition worldwide. We are here today to demonstrate to the world that we have grown to the level of competence where we are ready to share our innovative experience in life sciences, and more than willing to explore marketing opportunities for our intellectual products.

Let me conclude by wishing to all the participants fruitful and active discussions under the auspices of this forum; I am convinced that this conference will set a stage for the professionals in all various spheres of life sciences to interact, and for new ideas to be born. I believe that this conference will present opportunities for us to participate in the global research chains in life sciences and to become regular partners in the process of knowledge exchange.

I know for sure that our research community, business and Government will take an active part in the development of an innovative and life sciences-driven economy, the benefits of which can be shared by everyone.
