VIRGILIJUS ALEKNA WAS APPOINTED UNESCO CHAMPION FOR SPORT
Director General of UNESCO Koïchiro Matsuura appointed two-times Olympic and world champion and champion of Europe Virgilijus Alekna UNESCO Champion for Sport and entrusted him with a special mission to promote sport at schools.
This title is awarded to the most prominent figures in the sports world. V.Alekna joins the ranks of other UNESCO Champions for Sport: King of Football Pelé, Formula I pilot Michael Schumacher, Olympic judo champion David Douillet, tennis player Justine Henin-Hardenne, Olympic champion in pole-vaulting Serhiy Bubka, boxing champions Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, ice hockey player Viacheslav Fetisov.
These high-level sportsmen contribute to the promotion of UNESCO values in the world, as physical education and sports should lead to a better future of the young generation.
The official ceremony for the UNESCO champion nomination will be organized in November or December.
In 2003, President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus was conferred the title of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the Construction of Knowledge Societies.
