VILNIUS IS TO HOST OSCE CONFERENCE FOR NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS
Vilnius is to host a Conference for National Human Rights Institutions on 13-14 July, organised by Lithuanian chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
The floor of the Conference will be given to the members of the national human rights agencies, the parliament and the civil society representatives for the whole two days. The participants will have the opportunity to share their practice and experience with the representatives from the parliament, government, judiciary and civil society.Around 100 participants are expected to attend the Vilnius Conference. Opening speeches will be delivered by the Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė and the Director of the ODIHR Janez Lenarčič. Keynote speaker is Rosslyn Noonan, the Chair of the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions.
Empowerment of the national human rights agencies is one of the top priorities of 2011 Lithuanian OSCE chairmanship. The conference is the follow up of the supplementary Vienna OSCE human dimension meeting on national human rights agencies in April.
In the eve of the Conference, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry in association with the President‘s Office and the Ministry of Justice had organised an informal preparatory meeting, where the representatives of the Lithuanian institutions and ombudsmen from abroad elaborated the aspects related to establishing a national human rights agency in Lithuania.
