VILNIUS HOSTS CONSULTATIONS WITH GERMANY ON NON-PROLIFERATION, ARMS CONTROL, AND DISARMAMENT ISSUES

On 18 July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania hosted bilateral consultations with Germany. Participants exchanged views on important issues on the global non-proliferation, disarmament and arms control agenda. The meeting was attended by the Director of the Transatlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Gediminas Varvuolis and Ambassador Rolf Nikel, German Federal Commissioner for Arms Control and Disarmament.

The officials discussed their countries’ views on new initiatives on nuclear disarmament, the future of conventional arms control in Europe. They also discussed Iran’s nuclear challenge to the international community and the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The officials emphasized the close cooperation between Lithuania and Germany in the European Union and NATO, and that the countries would continue to consult closely on the important mutual security issues also in the future.
