VILNIUS HOLDS CONSULTATION ON SECURITY POLICY WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM SWEDEN’S FOREIGN MINISTRY

The representatives from the Lithuanian and Swedish Foreign Ministries met to discuss security issues on April 26 in Vilnius. The Director of the Transatlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department Gediminas Varvuolis presented aspects of Lithuania’s incoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union related to the dimension of the Common Security and Defence Policy, and position when preparing for the European Council on 19-20 December 2013, which was set to include a discussion on defence issues and cyber security.

At the meeting, officials also exchanged views on the cooperation between the EU and NATO, and discussed the European Global Strategy initiative.

The Head of the Security Policy Department of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden Peter Ericson expressed support for Lithuania’s goals during the period of the Presidency of the EU Council.

Varvuolis highlighted Sweden’s role in ensuring international and regional security, and hailed close cooperation in the area of security.
