Vilnius Conference attendees voice support for NATO candidate countries
At the Vilnius Conference dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Lithuania’s accession to NATO on 3 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius opened a ministerial session expressing strong support for NATO’s open door policy.
“Ahead of the NATO Summit in September in the United Kingdom we will seek to enhance possibilities for current candidate countries of joining the Alliance. Remembering Lithuania’s path to NATO membership, let me encourage the candidate countries to take advantage of instruments for cooperation with the Alliance, to contribute actively to NATO’s activities and to participate in joint exercises and training,” L.Linkevičius said.
High-ranking officials from NATO candidate countries are taking part in the Vilnius Conference 2014 on 3 and 4 April at the Presidential Palace.
The conference attendees also discussed the importance of NATO enlargement for international security and reminisced about Lithuania’s path to NATO membership. Representatives of the Alliance’s member countries and partner countries, NATO officials, representatives of centres for research and academicians are also debating the role of the partner countries in the Alliance’s policy, the emergence of the new security challenges, their significance for NATO’s agenda and the vision for the Alliance.

On the same day, the participants of the Conference visited the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force in Šiauliai.
