Vice-Minister Valys attends a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors: Focus on Iran, Zaporizhzhia power plant, and nuclear safety
On 19-21 November in Vienna, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Taurimas Valys, attends a meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to discuss Iran's nuclear programme, the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, and other key nuclear safety issues.
On the margins of the Board of Governors assembly, the Vice-Minister attended a meeting of representatives from European Union countries with Ambassador Yurii Vitrenko, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to International Organizations in Vienna. The participants of the meeting exchanged information on the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and agreed on joint actions within the IAEA format.
"Lithuania strongly condemns the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine and calls for the continued support of the European Union countries to Ukraine," said Valys.
The Vice-Minister spoke on the issue of Iran's nuclear programme and urged Iran to engage constructively with the IAEA, to provide legally binding information on its nuclear programme, and stressed that the implementation of Iran's agreement with the IAEA could not be suspended under any circumstances.
On 20 November, Lithuania voted for the Resolution demanding transparency regarding the status of Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium and its bombed nuclear sites, which was passed by the IAEA Board of Governors. The resolution was submitted by the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United States of America.
The Vice-Minister also met with representatives of the Netherlands and France on the margins of the meeting of the Board of Governors.
The IAEA is an organization within the United Nations system and has 180 member countries. The Board of Governors consists of 35 member states that are approved annually by the IAEA General Conference in September. Lithuania joined the organization in 1993 and was elected to the IAEA Board of Governors for the second time in 2025. Prior to that, Lithuania was a member of the Board of Governors during the 2007-2009 period.
