VICE-MINISTER TOOK PART IN THE EVENTS OF UNESCO’S EXECUTIVE BOARD

On 10 September in Paris, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė took part in the events of the 182nd session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at the headquarters of UNESCO.

The main issue at the session of the Executive Board is the election of UNESCO’s Director General. Joint candidate of the three Baltic States, Ambassador Ina Marčiulionytė is among the nine candidates to the post of UNESCO’s Director General.

During the meetings with representatives of other countries at the Executive Board, the Vice-Minister discussed important issues of UNESCO’s activities.

There are over 60 issues on the agenda of the session of the Executive Board, including UNESCO’s programme and budget for 2010-2011, the action plan for the “International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures” (2010), the implementation of the Information for All Programme, preparation for the forthcoming UNESCO’s General Conference.

In 2005, Lithuania was elected to UNESCO’s Executive Board for the term of four years. In the autumn of 2007, Ambassador I.Marčiulionytė became Vice-President of the Executive Board for the tenure of two years.

The 182nd session of UNESCO will end on 23 September.
