Vice-Minister Skusevičius congratulates Jonas Mekas

On 3 December in Frankfurt am Main, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Darius Skusevičius congratulated Jonas Mekas, who was awarded the B3 BEN Biennale award for his lifetime contribution to cinema and video art.

Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister also thanked the artist not only for his creative and life-long contribution, but also for the promotion of such values as moral openness, environmental sensitivity and solidarity, as well as for setting an example of curiosity and for showing own initiative.

Jonas Mekas has been called “the godfather of American avant-garde cinema”. He has proved that a displaced person (DP) from a DP camp can become an influential figure and still preserve his own Lithuanian roots.

The B3 Biennale is taking place from 29 November to 20 December 2017. He has received the award for lifetime contributions for the third time already. The award was also conferred on the artists Laurie Anderson (2013) and Brian Eno (2015).
