VICE-MINISTER OF THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS: ONE OF THE MAIN TOOLS OF FROZEN CONFLICT RESOLUTION IS REGIONAL COOPERATION
On April 15-16 in Azerbaijan, Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Jaroslav Neverovič is taking part in the international conference called “Basic Principles for the Settlement of the Conflicts on the Territories of the GUAM states”. The GUAM countries are Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova. During the conference, the Vice-Minister indicated that one of the main tools of conflict resolution was regional cooperation.
‘Lithuania’s experience proves that various tools of regional cooperation not just promote the cooperation of countries. Simultaneously, those tools help to change negative historical attitudes, to increase mutual understanding, to search for common goals and to implement them,’ spoke J.Neverovič.
Also the Vice-Minister noticed that the role of the European Union was especially important for the regulation of frozen conflicts.
Stating that it was complicated to find a quick way of resolution, the Vice-Minister named three main reasons for successful conflict regulation: first, the dialogue of countries, second, the participation of the international community in conflict solution and, third, the Euro-Atlantic community open door policy, which would encourage a dialogue between the governments of the states and the separatist leaders.
During the visit in Azerbaijan, bilateral meetings of J.Neverovič with Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Araz Azimov and Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov are also planned.
