VICE-MINISTER OF THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND THE EU COMMISSIONER DISCUSSED ISSUES OF MULTILINGUALISM

On 22 February, Vice-Minister of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jaroslav Neverovič met with Romanian EU Commissioner for Multilingualism Leonard Orban, during his visit in Lithuania.

At the meeting, the EU Commissioner and the Vice-Minister discussed important for Lithuania issues of multilingualism, contemplated problems regarding the translations in the EU institutions and a need for training qualified translators and interpreters.

The Vice-Minister took interest in the possibilities for Lithuanian children, living in other EU countries, to study their mother tongue at secondary schools. These studies could be included into educational programs as the studies of the second foreign language. The Commissioner promised to support this idea within the competence of the European Commission and mentioned that other countries with numerous communities in other EU countries were also facing similar problems.

During the meeting, the interlocutors also discussed the Belarusian European Humanities University, functioning in Vilnius. J.Neverovič and L.Orban exchanged opinions on further development of the activity of this unique European University and its support, also on the means of involving this institution of higher education into the EU cooperation network. 

The Vice-Minister and the EU Commissioner also discussed the important issues of the EU and international politics, spoke about Lithuania’s preparation for the EU presidency in 2013.
