VICE-MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS INDICATED THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVING THE BALTIC SEA ECOSYSTEM AT THE CONFERENCE IN GREECE

On 19-20 April Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaroslav Neverovič participated in the Conference “The New European Maritime Policy: Quality of life and security in coastal areas”, which took place in Rhodes, Greece.

This Conference is a part of the process of consultations regarding the Green Book on the new European Maritime Policy, which was published in 2006 by the European Commission. Officials of Ministries of Foreign Affairs from the EU Member States, representatives from the European Commission, agencies and international organizations came to exchange their opinions at the Conference.

At the Conference J.Neverovič indicated that the European Union’s Maritime Policy should reflect the issues that were important to all EU Member States, however, peculiarities of each sea and region should be also considered.

“Due to the intensive economic activity the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea is among the most vulnerable ones. A matter of concern is a huge amount of chemical ammunition that was released into the sea during the World War II and afterwards,” stated J.Neverovič.

He also drew attention that large-scale infrastructure projects in the Baltic Sea should not be implemented until performing a  comprehensive investigation of their impact on the environment.

Within the framework of the Conference J.Neverovič also held the bilateral meeting with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Yannis Valinakis.
