Vice-Minister Mitkus: We seek to actively represent Lithuania's interests in the European Economic and Social Committee

On 13 October, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus met with the new members of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) seconded by Lithuania, who will serve on the Committee from 2025 to 2030.

The meeting focused on the main topical issues of the Committee and Lithuania's priorities, including support for Ukraine, defence and security, EU enlargement, competitiveness, social agenda, historical memory, resilience, the EU's long-term budget, fight against disinformation.

According to Mitkus, Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2027 offers an excellent opportunity to present Lithuania’s positions in Europe.

"Our goal is to present the interests of our state. It is important to ensure close and constructive cooperation with the EESC members in drafting opinions and recommendations on issues of importance for Lithuania," the Vice-Minister noted.

The European Economic and Social Committee is an advisory body of the European Union is composed of representatives from workers' and employers' organizations, and other interest groups. It provides opinions on EU issues to the European Commission, Council, and Parliament. The EESC, with its headquarters in Brussels, has 329 members, 9 of whom represent Lithuania.
