Vice-Minister Mitkus: we must accelerate Ukraine's EU accession process

On 18 March, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Sigitas Mitkus, together with his Danish, Estonian, Latvian, Finnish, and Swedish counterparts, sent a joint letter to the Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos and the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU expressing support for the statement by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen that Ukraine could join the EU by 2030. The letter calls for accelerating the accession process and emphasizes the importance of opening Cluster 1, Fundamentals, as soon as possible and all the remaining clusters by the end of 2025.
“This letter calls on the European Commission and EU member states to strengthen their support for Ukraine’s EU accession process. The time to act is now,” Mitkus said.
Ukraine has made remarkable reform progress. A peaceful and prosperous Ukraine is of strategic importance for the future of our people and the continent as a whole, and Ukraine’s EU membership is an investment not only in Ukraine's security but also in the security of Europe. It is now time for us—the EU and Ukraine—to mobilize efforts to help Ukraine achieve strategic goals that should not be overshadowed by bilateral issues.
