Vice-Minister Mitkus: We appreciate the OECD's contribution to the implementation of structural change in Lithuania
On 9 December, a meeting with the Deputy Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Mary Beth Goodman, took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss the OECD’s support for Ukraine’s reconstruction and reform implementation, the organisation’s role in strengthening Lithuania’s development cooperation ecosystem, and opportunities to expand OECD’s expertise in reform areas of importance to Lithuania.
The Vice-Minister Sigitas Mitkus highlighted the importance of the OECD's support to Ukraine on its path towards EU membership and preparations to start the OECD accession process, mentioning that Lithuania supports the OECD-Ukraine Country Programme and activities of the OECD's Kyiv Office. Ukraine's imminent accession to the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention is a crucial step in the country's reform efforts in this regard.
Mitkus thanked Goodman for her personal contribution to the updating of the OECD Development Cooperation Strategy, emphasised the benefits of the organisation's expert support to Lithuania in improving the national development cooperation system, and emphasized the very useful recently completed OECD project on strengthening the Lithuanian development cooperation ecosystem.
The Vice-Minister also noted the importance of the recommendations of the OECD economic reviews for Lithuania in implementing structural reforms and achieving further progress in the country's tax policy, education, social protection, environmental protection and other important areas, highlighted the potential of cooperation between Lithuania and the OECD in addressing demographic challenges and fighting disinformation.
“The OECD expert support is highly appreciated in Lithuania. Joint Lithuanian-OECD initiatives to counter disinformation and strengthen the administrative capacity of the public sector should be continued and developed in the future.”
Goodman has served as the OECD Deputy Secretary-General since April 2024. Her areas of responsibility include public governance, development cooperation and the fight against corruption.
