Vice-Minister K. Vaitiekūnas’s visit to Berlin focuses on economic security and defence industry resilience

On 4 November, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Kristupas Vaitiekūnas visited Berlin, where he met Dr Thomas Steffen, State Secretary at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, took part in a panel discussion at the Geo-Economics Conference and attended the Berlin Security Conference.

During his meeting with Dr Steffen, the Vice-Minister discussed bilateral cooperation on strengthening defence industry supply chains, current economic security challenges and Lithuania’s priorities in the area of trade policy for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Speaking at the closing panel, Economic Security: Power, Trade and Critical Raw Materials, of the 5th annual Geo-Economics Conference, organised by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and the Centre for Economic Policy Research, the Vice-Minister stressed that strengthening the resilience of Europe’s defence industry must become one of the most urgent priorities.

“Modern defence capabilities depend on access to critical technologies and raw materials, as well as reliable supply chains. We must strengthen our economic security, reduce strategic dependencies and build resilient supply chains by working with trusted partners,” the Vice-Minister said.

At the Berlin Security Conference, Vaitiekūnas visited the stand showcasing Lithuanian companies and discussed issues of importance to Lithuania’s defence industry.
