Vice-Minister Audra Plepytė and the Council of Europe Congress Secretary General discussed support for Ukraine and the strengthening of regional democracy

On 16 April, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Audra Plepytė met with Mathieu Mori, Secretary General of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.

“We greatly appreciate that support for Ukraine is a priority for the Congress; the Congress’s initiatives are important for strengthening the resilience of Ukraine’s regions and local governments and for contributing to the reconstruction processes that are most felt in local communities,” the Vice-Minister noted.

The meeting featured a presentation on Lithuania’s sustainable development initiatives and aid projects in Ukraine, as well as a discussion of the Council of Europe’s initiative regarding the search for, registration, and return of forcibly displaced Ukrainians, and ensuring the aggressor’s international accountability.  

The meeting also addressed the Congress’s relations and cooperation with Belarusian democratic forces operating abroad, as well as the establishment of the Council of Europe Information Point for Belarusian People in Vilnius.

The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe is responsible for strengthening local and regional democracy in member states and for monitoring the application of the European Charter of Local Self-Government.
