USHERING IN 2009, LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER OPENS AN EXHIBITION OF NIKO PIROSMANI, A WORLD FAMOUS PAINTER
On 31 December at Vilnius Picture Gallery, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas took part in the opening ceremony of an exhibition of paintings by distinguished Georgian painter Niko Pirosmanashvili (Pirosmani), who created at the turn of the 20th century. The cultural events of “Vilnius - European Capital of Culture 2009” start with this art exhibition -at the Vilnius Picture Gallery, a branch of the Lithuanian Art Museum. This event is the highlight of the programme, due to which Vilnius becomes an attraction centre on the map of the European culture.
“Today we can be glad that our nations are united by love of freedom, security and territorial integrity. I am pleased that after Vilnius has become a European Capital of Culture, all Europe has a possibility to view this unique Georgian treasure of art. I would like to thank the National Museum of Georgia and Lithuanian Art Museum for this precious gift, which will strengthen the friendship of the Georgian and Lithuanian nations”, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas said. The Minister has recently returned from Tbilisi.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius, Minister of Culture Remigijus Vilkaitis, Vice-Mayor of Tbilisi Mamuka Akhvlediani and Georgia’s Ambassador to Lithuania Georgi Kerdikoshvili took part in the opening ceremony.
Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs helped in organising this exhibition in Vilnius. Partners of the Project are the Ministry of Culture of Lithuania, the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Air Force, which transported the paintings of Pirosmani to Lithuania with a military transport aircraft.
