US State Secretary Colin Powell expressed his gratitude to Lithuania for practical contribution to the US project of security assistance to Georgia aimed at enhancing capabilities of fighting terrorism.
In his letter of 28 March to Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis, State Secretary Powell thanked for contribution to the "Georgia Train and Equip Program" (GTEP), under which Georgian antiterrorist military regiments were trained and equipped. These regiments later on took part in the antiterrorist operations in Georgia’s Pankisi Gorge.
The US State Secretary’s letter underscored that the programme supported by Lithuania was “critical to both the Global War on Terrorism and the preservation of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” and “enabled the Government of Georgia to reestablish control over its territory and to support our common objective of combating terrorism”.
