UNITY OF BALTIC AND SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRIES IS AN EXCELLENT MESSAGE IN OUR TURBULENT WORLD, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS
On 28 September at the ceremony dedicated to opening of new premises of Vilnius University Center of Scandinavian Studies Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis stressed the importance of political, economic and cultural cooperation between Lithuania and Scandinavia and increasing unity of Baltic and Nordic countries.
The Minister reminded that this year Lithuania commemorates the 20th anniversary of international recognition of the restored independence and reestablishment of diplomatic relations with the world community. “The Nordic countries were the first to accept the awakening Baltic States and Lithuania’s aspirations for freedom,” A.Ažubalis said. The apologies made this summer by a high-ranking Swedish official on “not entirely honest” Swedish conduct towards the occupied Baltic States during the Cold War is, according to the Minister, another proof of today’s trust-based ties between the Baltic and Scandinavian nations.
A.Ažubalis stressed that in this time of unrest, economic crises and doubts on sustainable future enhancing unity between the Baltic and Nordic states is an excellent message. “Today after 20 years we dare to send the world a message about a solid, prosperous and united region of the Baltic and Nordic states,” the minister stated.
He thanked everybody who contributed to renewal of the Center of Scandinavian Studies and ensured its meaningful activities.
According to the Minister Lithuanians and particularly the youth should “learn as much as they can about authentic Scandinavian historic, linguistic and cultural heritage”.
“Not in order to leave Lithuania after finishing their studies but to adopt their knowledge here in their country,” the Minister added.
