The United States has been granted the permanent diplomatic clearance for the overflight and landing of the Government and military aircrafts also if an armed conflict in Iraq would occur.
The permanent diplomatic clearance was granted on 26 September 2001 in connection with the US-led anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan. The clearance was extended on 1 January 2003 and is valid through 31 December 2003.
Another ten NATO states, which had applied to the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry – Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey and the United Kingdom, have also received permanent diplomatic clearances for the overflight and landing.
At the start of this year the United States requested Lithuania a permanent diplomatic clearance for the overflight of the US and other anti-terrorist coalition partners’ aircrafts and in case of necessity their stationing in the Lithuanian territory.
