UNDERSECRETARY OF LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTRY: WE ARE AIMING AT JOINING LITHUANIAN AND EUROPEAN ENERGY MARKETS

On 13 May, Undersecretary of Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė took part in the 14th meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the EU and the Rio Group in Prague.

Foreign Undersecretary A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė stressed that one of the main ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions causing global warming and to guarantee energy security was to produce more energy from renewable energy sources. However, according to the Undersecretary of the Ministry, it was very important to secure the balance between the development of renewable energy sources and its impact on the environment.

A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė observed that despite all efforts there would always be countries, which would not have a possibility to increase the amount of energy produced from renewable energy sources to the recommended level. Therefore, it was necessary to join energy systems. According to the Undersecretary of the Ministry, the infrastructure of energy links will also guarantee the diversification of energy sources.

“Lithuania aims at integrating its energy sector into the joint European energy market. Increasing energy efficiency, intensified usage of renewable energy sources and nuclear energy will help us to tackle the challenges of climate change and to guarantee energy security,” said Undersecretary of the Ministry A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry remarked that coinciding shared interests of the EU and Latin American countries in the area of renewable energy sources would allow starting a close cooperation.

The Rio Group is a permanent forum of political consultation and coordination of Latin American and some Caribbean states. Currently the Rio Group is chaired by Mexico.

The EU and the Rio Group opened a formal political dialogue at the level of Ministries of Foreign Affairs in 1990. Meetings of Foreign Ministers, organised every two years, serve as a link in preparation for the EU-Latin American and Caribbean summits.
