U.S. Department of Energy’s representatives share experiences in protecting strategic energy infrastructure
A seminar on energy security for the U.S. and Lithuanian representatives took place on 27 May at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania. The seminar was co-organized by the Ministry of Energy of Lithuania, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a group of state-controlled energy companies EPSO-G and the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius. The seminar is an integral part of the project for the three Baltic states, which is dedicated to the strengthening of regional energy security and cooperation.
The seminar focused on the most important issues of the natural gas and power sector, issues and prospects for the synchronization and protection of the critical energy infrastructure.
The event was attended by representatives of the United States Department of Energy, the Ministry of Energy of Lithuania, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EPSO-G, the Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid, and the natural gas transmission system operator AmberGrid.
The U.S. representatives shared their best practices, presented the United States Department of Energy’s study ‘Quadrennial Energy Review’ on transforming the U.S. energy infrastructure to ensure economic competitiveness, energy security and environmental protection. The U.S. experience is very important for Lithuania, because the country implemented a series of strategic energy infrastructure projects over the past year: the liquefied natural gas terminal in Klaipėda, power links with Poland and Sweden. Therefore, it is especially important that the U.S. representatives share their experiences on the legal regime in the United States and the protection of the critical energy infrastructure system, the distribution of individual institutions’ functions, as well as the coordinating role. Lithuania has plans to hold such events with the U.S. representatives also in the future.
