U.S. CONGRESS DELEGATION VISITS LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY

At the meeting with the delegation of the U.S. House of Representatives led by the Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Dan Burton on 29 June in Vilnius, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis evaluated the U.S. contribution to the spread of democracy around the world and thanked the delegation for the long-term U.S. support of Lithuania’s struggle for Independence.

“We need America’s political, military and economic attention to Europe. Only together we can ensure peace and stability in the old continent,” A.Ažubalis emphasized.

He acquainted the guests with strategic objectives of the Lithuanian government in the field of energy and invited the U.S. to support the energy projects that were being developed in Lithuania with an aim to ensure the country’s energy independence. The Minister drew the attention of the guests to safety problems of the nuclear power plants that were to be constructed in the neighborhood of Lithuania. The guests took interest in Lithuania’s support of its Eastern neighbors in strengthening democratic institutions and civil society.

The delegation of the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress is taking part in the Parliamentary Forum of the Community of Democracies, which takes place on 29-30 June at the Seimas (Parliament).

The U.S. delegation consists of seven members of the House of Representatives, who represent the Democratic and Republican parties in the U.S. Congress: Dan Burton, Rubén Hinojosa, Mike McIntyre, Madeleine Bordallo, Theodore Deutch, Tom Marino, and Mario Diaz-Balart. On 29 June, the Members of Congress are holding meetings with the Lithuanian Prime Minister, Speaker of the Seimas and Members of Parliament.
