TWO OUT OF THREE INHABITANTS OF LITHUANIA WOULD VOTE IN FAVOUR OF NATO MEMBERSHIP

Almost two thirds of Lithuanian inhabitants would vote in favour of the country’s accession to NATO according to opinion polls conducted in December. If a ballot were to take place, Lithuanian membership in NATO would be supported by 65 percent of the country’s inhabitants. 20.2 percent would vote against it, while 14.8 percent would not go to the ballot at all. Lithuania’s integration into NATO is supported by 75.6 percent of the inhabitants. 60.4 percent are active supporters of NATO membership, 15.2 percent do not object to it. 3.8 percent of the respondents are not interested in NATO and the country’s national security prospects, 20.6 percent of the polled believe that Lithuania can do without NATO membership. A representative survey of 1070 inhabitants was carried out by the Market and Public Opinion Research Centre Vilmorus on 5-8 December at the request of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The poll targeted inhabitants aged above 18 from 18 urban and 56 rural locations.
