TWO EXHIBITIONS ON CHINA OPEN AT THE LITHUANIAN MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
On 25 October, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė opened two exhibitions at the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: the exhibition dedicated to the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Oriental studies at Vilnius University and the exhibition “Look at China” with pictures by photographer Vytautas Daraškevičius.
In her welcome speech, the Vice-Minister stressed that people had to get to know Asia in view of its constantly growing importance in the world.According to the Vice-Minister, the two exhibitions complement each other and reflect the long path that Lithuania has covered towards getting to know China and Asia. The exhibitions combine authentic old manuscripts and photographs of modern China.
The opening of the exhibition was also attended by Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Lithuania Mingtao Tong.
The exhibition that celebrates the 200th anniversary of Oriental studies at Vilnius University was prepared by Vilnius University Library. The exhibition tells about Oriental studies and knowledge at Vilnius University. The exhibition displays books and manuscripts that show the contribution of the Lithuanian scholars to the Oriental studies and their interest in the Oriental culture over the past two hundred years.
The photo exhibition entitled “Look at China” features photographs that were taken by photographer Vytautas Daraškevičius during his four journeys to China.
The photographer took part in the China folklore photographic exhibition thrice and won an award for his pictures of the Lithuanian midsummer and spring festivals.
These exhibitions are part of the China Days in Lithuania 2010. The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Lithuania-China Forum are holding these events on 25-31 October in Vilnius. The Chinese cultural events take place on the occasion of Lithuania’s National Pavilion Day at Expo 2010 in Shanghai on 25 October.
During the China Days, public lectures and discussions on China, presentations on traditional Chinese medicine and cuisine also take place. The Week of Chinese Films takes place at the cinema boutique Pasaka.
On 28 October, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will host a discussion entitled “Lithuania and China: the Potential of Transportation and Logistics”, during which politicians and business representatives will discuss possibilities for developing cooperation with China and for making use of the Lithuanian transportation and logistics capabilities. The non-governmental organization Baltic Vision Group prepared a study entitled “Transport Development in Lithuania: China’s Potential”, which will be presented to the participants. Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė will welcome the participants of the discussion.
