On 11-13 September, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey Abdullah Gül will visit Lithuania.
The Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs will acquaint Lithuanian officials with Turkey’s progress in the view of the country’s striving for membership in the European Union (EU) and seek to ensure their support before Brussels adopts decision on the beginning of negotiations between Turkey and the EU.
During the visit, the Lithuanian officials will share Lithuania’ integration into the EU experience. Topical issues of the international politics will also be discussed.
On 11 September, Abdullah Gül will meet Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis. The officials intend to discuss bilateral Lithuanian-Turkish cooperation, Turkey’s preparations to enter the EU, topical issues of NATO agenda, fight against international terrorism, peace process in the Middle East and experience of regional cooperation of both countries.
On 12 September, the Turkish Minister will go to the fifth biggest Lithuanian city Panevėžys, where he will pay a visit to the enterprise Ekranas. After the visit and a press conference, the guest will have a conversation with the Panevėžys Municipality officials.
In the evening of the same day, the Turkish Minister will meet President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus.
On 12 September, Abdullah Gül will meet Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas and participate in the fifth North-South economic forum.
This event arranged in Lithuania for the first time will gather together some 80 present and former high ranking politicians, well-known European economic experts and representatives of business world.
The forum will cover three subjects. The first part will be devoted to the major issues of the European regional economy. The second topic will be Turkey’s membership in the European Union. The third part of the forum will address the issue of European enlargement financing.
The goal of this annual economic forum is to encourage economic cooperation between Northern and Southern Europe. The first such forum took place in 2000 in Istanbul.
