On 5 February, a tripartite meeting between representatives of Lithuania, the European Union and Russia on transit order to and from the Kaliningrad region took place in Brussels. During the meeting, the parties exchanged information on the implementation of the joint EU-Russian declaration signed on 11 November 2002 on transit between the Kaliningrad region and mainland Russia focusing on practical issues of a simplified transit through Lithuanian territory by train as of 1 July of this year.
At the meeting the Lithuanian delegation was headed by Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Darius Jurgelevičius, European Commission delegation and the Russian delegation were led by Director General for External Relations Guy Legras and Foreign Vice Minister Sergei Razov respectively.
EU representatives briefed about drafted regulations on facilitated travel documents. The regulations will serve as the legal basis for solving the transit issues to and from the Kaliningrad region.
The parties reached an agreement that a mechanism of practical implementation of the document on simplified transit via Lithuania by train will be discussed in the near future at a tripartite meeting of experts on the basis of a draft document prepared by the European Commission.
