TRAVELLERS TO NON-EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES WILL GET IMPROVED CONSULAR ASSISTANCE SERVICE

Seeking to guarantee the protection of Lithuanian citizens and ensure quick and effective consular assistance in the non-European Union countries, Lithuania and Hungary signed an agreement guaranteeing immediate consular assistance to Lithuanian citizens in diplomatic representations of Hungary in those countries, to which Lithuania has no accredited diplomatic representations.

According to the agreement, our citizens are entitled to address Hungarian diplomatic representations in Chile, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Montenegro, Cyprus, Cuba, Lebanon, Macedonia, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, Syria, Thailand, Taiwan (China), and Vietnam.

Similar agreements have already been signed with Poland. In case of an accident, Lithuanian citizens are entitled to address consular representations of this country, asking for urgent consular assistance in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. Besides, due to the corresponding mutual agreements with Latvia and Estonia, Lithuanian citizens are entitled to receive consular assistance in those countries, where there are no Lithuanian embassies.

Treaty establishing the European Community and the decision of the governments of the EU Member States, as well as other EU laws protect Lithuanian citizens as the EU citizens, who are entitled to address a diplomatic representation of any EU country in a third country, in case there is no national diplomatic representation in that country.

For more information see the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania at https://www.urm.lt/index.php?-92699062. In this website you will find more detailed information on the assistance to Lithuanian citizens offered by diplomatic representations of the EU Member States in third countries.
