TRANSATLANTIC COMMUNITY SHOULD KEEP LEADER’S POSITION WHEN FACING GLOBAL SECURITY CHALLENGES

On 9-10 July at the “Croatia Summit 2010 - South East Europe Facing Global Challenges” in Dubrovnik,  Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Šarūnas Adomavičius called on the transatlantic community to keep leader’s position when facing global security challenges, and, at the same time, to adjust  the existing policy coordination and consultation mechanisms.

During the Summit, the Vice-Minister spoke during the session on global security and transatlantic relations.

“I am convinced that only cooperation, coordination and joint common efforts will ensure global security, stability and prosperity,” Vice-Minister Š.Adomavičius said.

He also highlighted that Lithuania would dedicate special attention to the continuity of the Corfu Process during the country’s chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2011.

The Corfu Process, also known as the European security dialogue, aims to evaluate the efficiency of the OSCE mechanisms and the effectiveness of the implementation of commitments, to foresee ways and means for the improvement of conflict prevention, decision making and the system of early warning about security threats in the OSCE space.

, The participants of the Summit discussed ways to improve the EU-NATO cooperation, to define NATO’s priorities of the Alliance’s new Strategic Concept, to strengthen the European security architecture after the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon. Goals of the countries in the region to overcome the global economic crisis and the European Union’s enlargement in South East Europe were also discussed.

During the visit to Croatia, Vice-Minister Š.Adomavičius met with Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Jandroković and discussed the scheduled visit of President of Croatia Ivo Josipović to Lithuania, Croatia’s aspirations to become an EU member and Lithuania’s upcoming chairmanship of the OSCE.

Vice-Minister Š.Adomavičius and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj discussed the planned visit of Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister also met with Milan Roćen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro.
