THE USA CONGRATULATES LITHUANIA ON SUCCESSFULLY ORGANIZED PROLIFERATION SECURITY INITIATIVE EXERCISE

On 1 June Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas received a letter from US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice congratulating Lithuania on successfully organized Proliferation Security Initiative exercise “Smart Raven”.

In this letter the US Secretary of State stresses that while the threat of the spread of weapons of mass destruction and related technologies increases, the international exercise held in Lithuania has significantly enhanced possibilities of interception and examination of hazardous cargoes.

It is indicated that implementing the goals of Proliferation Security Initiative Lithuania has become the main partner and region leader. Lithuania is also thanked for the expert and financial input.

On 26-27 April of the current year the aircraft inspection training was held in Vilnius and in the Šiauliai military airport. Experts from Poland, Latvia and Estonia took part in the training, as well as observers from 19 countries.

In 2003 the Proliferation Security Initiative was launched by USA President George W.Bush and it aims at employing certain tools to halt the illicit spread of weapons of mass destruction, their delivery to malevolent countries and terrorists.

The Initiative participant countries are ready to intercept maritime, air and other kinds of suspicious cargoes of proliferation materials. Currently more than 80 nations have committed to this Initiative.
