THE UPCOMING CZECH EU PRESIDENCY IS A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO STRENGTHEN COOPERATION BETWEEN THE BALTIC STATES AND THE VISEGRÁD COUNTRIES

On 5-6 November, during the bilateral consultations in Prague Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic discuss important issues of bilateral cooperation and matters related to the European Union. During the meeting with Czech Deputy Vice Prime Minister for the European Affairs, and Head of the Section for the preparation of the Czech Presidency in the Council of the EU Jana Hendrichova, the preparations of the Czech Republic for the EU presidency in 2009 was discussed. Lithuanian delegations also presented interests of its country. L.Talat-Kelpša noted that during the Czech presidency Lithuania will pay a lot of attention to the agenda of the three E’s - formation of the new European bodies, energy and the European Neighbourhood policy. In 2009 the EU Reform Treaty should come into effect and the European Parliament elections are to be held.

According to the Undersecretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Czech presidency is a unique opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the Baltic states and the Visegrád countries, regarding the most important EU issues, as both groups of countries present similar position on many issues of the EU’s external policy.

Undersecretary of the Ministry L.Talat-Kelpša invited the Czech Republic to share its experience of getting prepared for the presidency.

These issues will also be discussed in detail on 6 November, during the meetings with  Deputy Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic Helena Bambasova and Director of European Territory Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Hana Hubačkova.
