THE U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE CONGRATULATED LITHUANIA ON THE FORTHCOMING ANNIVERSARY OF THE RESTORATION OF INDEPENDENCE

In the evening of 11 February, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis had a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who congratulated the people of Lithuania on the forthcoming twentieth anniversary of the restoration of independence.

During the conversation with Secretary of State H.Clinton, the Minister stressed that Lithuania would aim to further maintain a special relationship with the United States of America and that Lithuania valued the U.S. support to Lithuania’s independence and its integration into NATO.

Minister A.Ažubalis assured that Lithuania would continue to actively contribute to NATO’s operation in Afghanistan. According to the Minister, the strengthening of security and reconstruction of the state of Afghanistan is the Alliance’s joint task. Therefore, Lithuania will continue its military and civilian activities in this country.

Minister A.Ažubalis and Secretary of State H.Clinton also discussed the priorities of Lithuania’s Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in 2011 and joint activities within the Community of Democracies. Lithuania chairs the Community until the middle of 2011.

The U.S. Secretary of State invited the new Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to pay a visit Washington.
