THE U.S. OFFICIALS PRESENTED A DRAFT OF MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING TO LITHUANIA
On 5 February, 2008, the officials of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) presented a draft of Memorandum of Understanding to the Lithuanian Embassy in Washington, regarding the lifting of the U.S. visa requirement for the Lithuanian citizens and the implementation of additional security criteria.
The draft of Memorandum was prepared based on the provisions of the Law 9/11, which was passed on 3 August 2007. The Memorandum of Understanding is also presented to current members of the old Visa Waiver Program (VWP), and to the countries that are seeking to join the program.
In March, an expert delegation from the Department of Homeland Security intends to come to Vilnius, with which the provisions of the Memorandum, which is being presented to Lithuania, will be discussed. During this visit, it is expected to harmonize further cooperation among the institutions of the two countries, seeking to lift the U.S. visa requirement for the Lithuanian citizens.
The presentation of the Memorandum to Lithuania is a very important step towards a visa-free regime with the U.S.A.
