THE THIRD CONVENTION OF LITHUANIAN HONORARY CONSULS IS ORGANIZED IN VILNIUS

On 4-6 July in Vilnius Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is organizing the third convention of Lithuanian Honorary Consuls in foreign countries.

More than 100 Honorary Consuls from 56 countries will take part in it. Lithuanian Honorary Consuls will discuss the currently important issues of Lithuanian economy, business relations and investment possibilities, culture, tourism development, as well as the questions of Lithuania’s image in the world.

On 4 July in the Narutis Hotel the convention will be opened by Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas. Lithuania’s representatives will be acquainted with Lithuanian economy news and perspectives by Adviser to the President of SEB Vilniaus Bankas Gitanas Nausėda. They will be told about investments into Lithuania by Indorama vice-president Vinod K.Gupta and about the potential of knowledge economy in Vilnius-Kaunas dipole by Executive Director at Knowledge Economy Forum Edgaras Leichteris. Vice-president of Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists Rimas Varkulevičius will elucidate the cooperation possibilities between associated business structures and  the Honorary Consuls.

On 5 July in Vilnius City Municipality, Honorary Consuls will be greeted by Vilnius City Mayor Juozas Imbrasas. The session will be opened and discussions will be chaired by Undersecretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Laimonas Talat-Kelpša. Vice-Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania Gintaras Sodeika will give a speech about the significance of culture in creating the image of the country. Acting Director of Public Institution “Vilnius - European Capital of Culture 2009” Elona Bajorūnienė will acquaint the guests with the conception and the program of the project “Vilnius - European Capital of Culture 2009” and discussion on how Honorary Consuls could popularize the planned events abroad will be held. Director of the Lithuanian State Department of Tourism Alvitis Lukoševičius will talk about tourism development in Lithuania. An open discussion on Lithuania’s image in the world will be initiated by General Director of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre Gintautas Kėvišas.

There is also a cultural program being prepared for the participants of the convention. Honorary Consuls will visit Trakai and participate in the events of Lithuanian Song Festival, as well as in the celebration of Lithuanian Statehood Day. A separate program is envisaged for the spouses of  the Honorary Consuls.

The goal of the convention of Lithuanian Honorary Consuls that is being organized for the third time is to acquaint  the Honorary Consuls with the most important issues in Lithuania, development tendencies and possibilities in various areas in our country. Moreover, other aims are to exchange opinions on the activities of Honorary Consuls, their experience and suggestions seeking to cooperate creatively and effectively.

The first convention of Honorary Consuls was held in Vilnius, autumn of 2001 and the second convention was organized in the summer of 2004. Conventions of Honorary Consuls are organized once every three years. Currently there are 143 Lithuanian Honorary Consuls in 67 countries of the world.
