THE THIRD CONSULATE HEADED BY LITHUANIAN HONORARY CONSUL OPENS IN ISRAEL
On 17 December in Jerusalem, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas opened the consulate, which is headed by new Lithuanian Honorary Consul, Chairman of the Israel Federation of Bi-National Chambers of Commerce and Industry Amnon Dotan. The Minister handed in a seal to A.Dotan and expressed trust that the new consulate would contribute to strengthening bilateral relations and economic ties between Lithuania and Israel.
A.Dotan is assigned to carry out consular functions in the consular district of the city of Jerusalem. He is a well known Israeli businessman, chairman of various business organizations.
At the consulate, the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy conferred the award of honour “The Star of Lithuania’s Millennium” on Israeli and Lithuanian citizen, Director General of the Jerusalem International Book Fair Zev Birger for his long-term efforts to build the Lithuanian-Israeli cultural relations.
On Thursday in Jerusalem, the Minister also visited the Yad Vashem museum, the world’s largest Holocaust research centre, and paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. Minister V.Ušackas awarded the President’s Medal for Merits to Lithuania to Katya Gusarov, the Yad Vashem employee that has found hundreds of Lithuanians, who rescued Jews during the Holocaust and whose names now are on the list of the Righteous among the Nations.
On the same day, the Minister participated in the Lithuanian-Israeli intellectuals forum at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya, the largest private university in Israel, and delivered a lecture “Lithuania: Challenges and Opportunities” to the students of the Global Research in International Affairs Centre.
On Thursday evening at the Nahum Goldman Museum of the Jewish Diaspora in Tel Aviv, Minister V.Ušackas opened an exhibition of photographs by Raimondas Paknys “The Sounds of Silence”, which is dedicated to the Jewish cultural heritage in Lithuania.
On 18 December during the Jewish Sabbath, the Minister will attend a cultural program. On 19 December, the day before leaving for Lithuania, Minister V.Ušackas will hold meetings with Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Fouad Twal, members of the Association of Vilna Jews in Israel “Vilna Beit” and the Association of Lithuanian Jews in Israel. The Minister will confer the award of honour “The Star of Lithuania’s Millennium” on the chairman of the Association of Vilna Jews in Israel Michael Shemiavitz.
The Foreign Minister returns to Vilnius on 20 December.
