The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives expressed his support for strengthening NATO capabilities in the Baltic countries
On February 26 Foreign Affairs Minister Linas Linkevičius met with the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Hon. John Boehner, before finishing his visit to the U.S. They discussed the importance of U.S. leadership in strengthening NATO collective defense measures alongside the eastern borders of the Alliance.
"We expect a solid U.S. prepositioning of equipment and forces as well as joint exercises. It is important to adapt NATO collective defense measures to the new challenges", - said L. Linkevičius.
John Boehner agreed on the need to strengthen initiatives which provide an alternative source of information for Russian-speaking audiences, such as Radio Free Europe TV program ‘Current time’.
During the meeting Foreign Minister discussed with the Speaker support for Ukraine, including strengthening of its defense capabilities. "We respect a position of each country, but Ukraine has an inherent right to defend its territory and people. Western support in arms and equipment is very important, "- said L. Linkevičius.
Minister also discussed these issues with the Chairman of U.S. Senate Subcommittee on European Affairs Ron Johnson, who emphasized the need to continue the pressure on Russia, until its position regarding aggression in Ukraine is changed. Mr. Johnson expressed his fears that if Putin is not stopped in Ukraine, he may decide to continue the aggression in Eastern Europe.
