THE POTENTIAL OF THE “VIKING” TRAIN WAS DISCUSSED AT A TELECONFERENCE
On 25 January, Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a teleconference between Vilnius and Odessa, during which the Baltic-Black Sea transport corridor was presented. Participants discussed functional issues and development of the project of the container train “Viking”.
The discussion has revealed new opportunities to increase the cargo flow that the container train “Viking” carries between Klaipėda and Odessa.The participants of the teleconference discussed the necessity to simplify and improve the efficiency of border crossing and customs procedures. The development of the “Viking” project will be significantly influenced also by the tariff policy of freight traffic.
The officials and businessmen agreed to more actively apply new means of telecommunication and internet for the dissemination of information about the project. In addition, the development of the “Viking” project should be prompted by consultations with national freight forwarders and carriers, and their associations.
The teleconference enables to strengthen transport links between Lithuania and Ukraine, and to use the existing potential for intermodal transport of both countries better.
The teleconference was co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, the Embassy of Lithuania in Ukraine and Odessa’s regional chamber of commerce. Lithuanian and Ukrainian diplomats, representatives from national and regional governmental institutions and businessmen took part in the teleconference.
