“It allows the enlargement process to proceed according to timetable and adds optimism and enthusiasm. That is a positive political and psychological impact for both EU member states and candidate countries during the decisive stage of preparation for enlargement”, Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis said.
When the treaty of Nice comes into force further preparation for the enlargement process will depend mainly on the candidate countries. “The Irish vote finished the preparation of the EU institutions for admitting new member states and the focus can be shifted on substantial issues of EU accession negotiations. Much work still lies ahead, but having a clear situation with enlargement, I have no doubt we will finish it on time”, foreign minister added.
“We see that the majority of Irish people both positively estimate advantages of Ireland membership in the EU and understand the aspirations of the candidate countries”, minister Valionis said.
