THE OUTGOING FOREIGN MINISTER OF LITHUANIA THANKS THE SWEDISH AMBASADOR FOR ENHANCING BILATERAL RELATIONS

On 11 December, the outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis bade farewell to the Ambassador of Sweden to Lithuania Cecilia Ruthström-Ruin and thanked her for her best efforts to further strengthen bilateral relations between Lithuania and Sweden.

The conversation focused on close bilateral and regional cooperation between the member states. Ažubalis wished Sweden to successfully coordinate the agenda of the Nordic Baltic Eight (NB8) in 2013. The interlocutors noted that it was important to continue the initiatives launched in 2012 and to ensure the attention of the Nordic and Baltic countries to the Eastern partnership countries. Next year, Sweden will hold the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The Minister thanked Sweden for contributing to Lithuania’s efforts to coordinate the NB8 agenda this year and welcomed the fact that Sweden remained the largest foreign direct investor in Lithuania.

Ažubalis expressed hope that relations between Sweden and Lithuania would continue to strengthen. Next year, the Lithuanian Embassy in Stockholm will act as NATO’s Contact Point Embassy. It is expected that the NordBalt project, which aims to construct an interconnection between Lithuanian and Swedish electric power systems, will be concluded by 2015.
