THE ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT LAUNCHES LITHUANIA-OECD ACTION PLAN

On 22 October, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) launched the Lithuania-OECD Action Plan for intense cooperation in the period 2014-2015. The Action Plan, which takes into consideration Lithuania’s interests and offers, opens up a window of opportunity for the country’s experts to become directly involved in the OECD Standing Committees, attend high-level events, and share expertise in the priority areas of public management and economic activity with the Member countries of the Organisation. The Action Plan also foresees starting specialized reviews of the country’s policies together with the OECD already in 2014, which could form basis for potential OECD accession negotiations.

The Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius argues that the launch of the Action Plan is a significant moment on the path to the OECD membership.

“If we implement it successfully, there will be a chance to move closer to the OECD acquis and to obtain a good starting position in full membership negotiations in 2015,” the Minister said.

On 30 May, the OECD Ministerial Council meeting heralded a phase of intense cooperation with Lithuania, with a view to opening, in due course, formal accession talks.
