THE NEW LITHUANIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS STARTS HIS TERM

On 10 December, new Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas started his office. Thanking his predecessor Ambassador Petras Vaitiekūnas for unresting work in forming and high-mindedly defending interests of Lithuania on the matters of foreign policy, new Minister V.Ušackas indicated that the 15th Government of Lithuania started its work on the eve of big challenges and big tasks.

According to V.Ušackas, problems that have accumulated both in Lithuania and in the global world will demand from the Government and every one of us responsibility, determination and effective activity, while implementing fundamental changes in many areas of our life.

Minister V.Ušackas indicated that one of primary tasks was to audit internal politics of the Ministry and its activities. The audit will help us to assess the current situation and, in compliance with the programme of the Government, will assist in determining priorities of Lithuania’s diplomacy for 2009 as well as guidelines of the activities diplomatic service.

Encouraging employees of the Ministry to apply the program of the Government in their daily activities, the Minister noted that the efficiency of diplomatic activities must be increased, while financial resources were lesser.

P.Vaitiekūnas and V.Ušackas“I am proud that during almost 19 years of Independent Lithuania we have managed to gather a wonderful, harmonious and professional team of diplomats and their helpers. For me it is a great honour to work with them,” said Minister V.Ušackas.

Since the times of re-establishment of the Independence of Lithuania, V.Ušackas has held various positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was the ambassador of Lithuania to the United States of America and to the United Kingdom.
