THE MAJORITY OF LITHUANIA’S RESIDENTS SUPPORT LITHUANIAN GOVERNMENT’S POSITION IN THE EU’S NEGOTIATIONS WITH RUSSIA

The vast majority of Lithuania’s residents (78%) approve the position of Lithuanian Government that the issue of reliable energy supply should be considered in the European Union’s negotiations with Russia. The Government is unanimously supported on the issue by Lithuania’s residents of different age, social status, of Lithuanian and other nationalities.

These trends were detected by national opinion poll about Lithuanian foreign policy initiatives conducted on 23 May-3 June on order of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 1020 Lithuania’s residents over 18 years old from all counties were polled.

Also the vast majority of Lithuania’s residents (72%) assent to Lithuania’s position that the issue of Russia’s obligation to cooperate with the EU in criminal cases, including the  events of 13th January, 1991 in Vilnius, and 31st July, 1991 in Medininkai should be debated in the European Union’s negotiations with Russia.

The most part of the residents (64%) think that the issue of compensation for damages to the people deported from occupied Baltic States should be also discussed  in the EU’s negotiations with Russia.

The Government is supported on the compensation for damages issue by the majority of Russian residents of Lithuania.

The majority of the society (51%) also agree that the issue of Russia’s obligation on constructive conflict resolution in Georgia and Moldova should be considered in the EU’s negotiations with Russia.
