THE LITHUANIAN PARLIAMENT RATIFIES THE AGREEMENTS ON LITHUANIA'S MEMBERSHIP IN THE WORLD TRADE ORGANISATION

On April 24, the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania approved Lithuania's membership in the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and ratified the results of the WTO accession negotiations. This decision contributes to acceleration of the process of Lithuania's integration into the world economy as well as harmonisation of country's trade policy with the internationally accepted standards. It marks the completion of the procedure of Lithuania's accession to the WTO, which started in 1995. Lithuanian delegation for accession negotiations officially completed the negotiations for Lithuania's membership in the WTO on October 2, 2000. On December 8 of the same year, the Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus signed the protocol on completion of the negotiations, which obligated Lithuania to ratify the WTO treaties, other legal documents and commitments made by Lithuania in the WTO accession negotiations by May 1, 2001. Now Lithuania will have to notify the WTO Secretary General on the ratification of the documents mentioned above. 30 days after the notification, Lithuania will become the 141st member of the WTO.
