THE LITHUANIAN MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS DEMANDS AN EXPLANATION FROM BELARUS REGARDING THE INCIDENT IN MINSK

On 26 March, Ambassador of Belarus to Lithuania Vladimir Drazhin was invited to the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and handed in a note regarding the arrest of the accredited to Belarus Lithuanian Television journalists in Minsk.

The note includes a request to examine the incident in detail, submit an explanation and return the videotape that was confiscated illegally.

Such illegal actions of Belarusian institutions of law and order, when journalists are forcefully prevented from performing their professional duty, rudely breach the principle of freedom of the press, which is respected in the societies of the democratic world, and contradict the goal of developing good relations between the neighbour countries. Lithuania, which has consistently supported open cooperation between the nations of neighbour nations, culture, business and direct people to people relations, cannot tolerate the violation of fundamental freedoms.

During the meeting, Ambassador of Belarus V.Drazhin promised to meet with Director General of the Lithuanian National Radio and Television after examining all details of the incident and to seek to resolve the conflict that had arisen.
