THE LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE PRESIDENT OF SLOVENIA

On 4 March, Lithuanian Ambassador Rimutis Klevečka presented credentials to the President of the Republic of Slovenia Danilo Türk. After the official ceremony, the head of the State of Slovenia and Ambassador R.Klevečka exchanged opinions on the perspectives of a more active bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Slovenia.

In the opinion of the President of Slovenia, both countries should dedicate more attention to the spreading of information, to presenting the history and culture of the countries to each other.

Ambassador R.Klevečka informed the President of Slovenia about the planned events presenting the Lithuanian culture in Slovenia by the Embassy. Special attention will be dedicated to the projects of Vilnius – the European Capital of Culture 2009. President D.Türk suggested establishing cooperation ties with Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia, which will be the European Capital of Culture 2011.

R.Klevečka called the attention of the President of Slovenia to the important challenge, which Lithuanian and Europe are facing – formation of the external EU energy policy and energy security issues. Ambassador indicated that Lithuania was an active participant of this process. Lithuania has submitted proposals to the EU Slovenian Presidency, concerning the conclusions of the European Council in March, and trusts that these proposals will be taken into account.

During the conversation, the possibility of establishing an Embassy of Slovenia in Lithuania was discussed.

Ambassador R.Klevečka is the first Lithuanian Ambassador residing in Slovenia. The Lithuanian Embassy in Slovenia was established on 3 December, 2007.

Lithuania and Slovenia established diplomatic relations on 22 November, 1991.
