THE LITHUANIA-PAKISTAN BILATERAL CONSULTATIONS FOCUS ON FURTHERING DEVELOPMENT

On 15 September in Vilnius, representatives from the Foreign Ministries of Lithuania and Pakistan held bilateral political consultations. The discussion focused on ways to strengthen political, economic, cultural and scientific cooperation.

Ina Marčiulionytė, Director of the Latin America, Africa, Asia and Pacific Department of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that Lithuania was interested in furthering cooperation in these fields and the establishment of Pakistan’s representation in Lithuania would contribute a lot to this process.

The consultations also discussed prospects for implementation of joint projects, cooperation within international organizations, also important international and regional policy issues.

Ayesha Riyaz, Additional Secretary Europe of Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented Pakistan’s domestic policies, the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, relations with India and Afghanistan.

Representatives of this South Asian state took interest in Lithuania’s preparations for the forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2013.

In the first half of 2012, the trade turnover between Lithuania and Pakistan was 38.44 million Litas.

The countries established diplomatic relations in May 1994.
