THE HEAD OF LITHUANIAN DIPLOMACY: IT IS NECESSARY TO PREPARE CAREFULLY FOR COOPERATION AGREEMENT WITH RUSSIA
On 1-2 September during the informal meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Finland Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas underlined the necessity to strengthen cooperation with Russia and to urge it not to forget democratic reforms and the building of market economy.
Minister Vaitiekūnas proposed his counterparts to pay attention not only to formal relations with Russian authorities, but also to the needs of citizens of the EU and Russia, for example the reduction of visa prices.
According to Lithuanian Foreign Minister, it is important to prepare carefully for negotiations on the new EU-Russia partnership and cooperation agreement, because the agreement will determine mutual relations for a long time.
“Therefore enough time should be devoted to these preparations,” the Minister said.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister discussed with his Italian counterpart Massimo D’Alema the issue of the building of Lithuanian Embassy in Rome. Mr D’Alema invited Minister Vaitiekūnas to Rome to continue the discussion.
