THE GERMAN-BALTIC STATES’ CULTURE YEAR OFFICIALLY OPENS IN GERMANY

On 15 March, the German-Baltic States’ Culture Year ‘Essentia Baltica 2008’ will officially open at the Berlin Philharmonic. The chamber orchestra Kremerata Baltica, which was created by Gidon Kremer and composed of young musicians from the Baltic States, will perform during the opening.

The concert repertoire is comprised of music of composers from the three Baltic States: Variations of Dzūkija by Bronius Kutavičius, compositions by Peter Vask and by Arvi Part.

Such patrons of the German-Baltic States’ Culture Year will attend the concert: Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany Horst Köhler, President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers, Speaker of the Estonian Parliament Ene Ergma.

The German-Baltic States’ Culture Year marks the 90th anniversary of the Lithuanian Independence. The Lithuanian Embassy in Germany together with the Ministry of Culture, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Lithuanian Institute are planning more than 60 various events in whole Germany.

The events in Germany have been organized since the beginning of 2008. During these events the modern Lithuanian art, the history of our country, possibilities of business and tourism are presented. The experience of the events in the past and parallels with today’s political processes in Europe, lessons for the future will be analysed in the conferences in Lithuania and Germany, dedicated to the year of 1918.

A separate exhibition in Berlin will present the Lithuanian post-war history: the resistance movement, repressions and exile. Important issues of the Cultural Year are personalities that unite Lithuania and Germany: Thomas Mann and Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. During the events, Lithuanian artists who live and create in Germany will also be presented.

It is expected that this Cultural Year will become a good opening of the program of cultural events in Germany in 2009, which will be dedicated to the millennium anniversary of the mention of the name of Lithuania and Vilnius – the European Capital of Culture 2009.

The German-Baltic States’ Culture Year events are sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Lithuanian Natural Gas Company ‘Lietuvos Dujos’ and E.ON Ruhrgas.
